IT JUST LOOKS RIGHT DOESN'T IT?!!!

Today I am proud to be an American. I say this with a new conviction, for I have always been proud to be an American. However, for the first time I have been blessed to see hope on a new level. I have been blessed to see opportunity on a new level. I have been blessed to see unity on a new level. I have been blessed to see the dreams and optimism of so many people along with their sweat and tears pay off in the way in which it has. Those people who worked to build the foundation of our great nation with their bare hands and no pay envisioned that one day the better part of man would prevail. Those people who marched for civil rights envisioned that one day this land would truly be a land of the free. Those people who were hosed and beaten while they peacefully protested envision a future that offered equal opportunity and prosperity for everyone. Those who spoke, lead and motivated our people to overcome years of oppression envisioned that one day the veil of ignorance would be lifted off of this nation. And from under that veil a nation built with the ideals of liberty and justice for all would rise to shine a beacon of light signifying truth and humanity. “And God said, let there be light!” And then, there was light.

As Barack Obama was projected, for the first time, to be the 44th President of this great nation, the United States of America, I felt so many different emotions. I watched and saw people celebrate. I also watch and saw people looking on in disbelief. I myself fought to hold back the tears. I remember thinking that we have come so far, farther than I imagined would be possible. However, I was quickly reminded that we still have far to go.

As I watched the expressions of those people who looked on in disbelief I could see a lot of resentment. Some were sadden that their candidate lost and they accepted defeat gracefully. But many seemed to have a different spark in their eye. This spark mirrored the outline of “the red states” on the electoral map. This outlined signified the so-called “old south” and “heartland of the nation”. History need not be forgotten; otherwise the past will doom the future.

Then as I refocused on the jubilant reactions of the crowd, I wondered what was it for them that made this moment joyful. Was it thoughts of a ninety-year old grandmother who lived through difficult racial times? Was it plain happiness from knowing that a Black man was elected to the highest office of our nation? Was it in knowing that another part of Martin Luther Kings Dream had come true? Was it in knowing those ‘Four Little Girls’ on that fateful Sunday Morning in Birmingham many years ago died symbolizing all that was wrong with our country? Was it watching Barack Obama walk hand in hand with Michelle and his daughters on stage and symbolize all that is right about our country today?

Today I am proud to be an American! In one of Dr. Martin Luther King’s speeches he included a verse from a hymn. The hymn was first sung at an Independence Day celebration by the Boston Sabbath School Union on July 4 in 1831. I feel that it would only be appropriate for me to end this with that verse from the hymn…

“My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From every mountainside,
Let freedom ring!”

Success is a Team Sport Posted By : Cheryl E. Cook

Recently, I've been approaching highway driving a little differently. I look for opportunities to help another motorist out. I try to be a bit more aware of a turn signal that I can respond to rather than driving in the zone. What would happen if we all approached highway driving with the focus on helping each other arrive safely at our destinations? What if it were a team effort?
