Hello To All,
No matter where you teach; be it inner city or suburban area, we share and face the challenges within this field. I've found over the course of years that teaching is definitely a calling. It is one that one must be tailored for. If I never get another raise (In Detroit, HA), I've earned my reward. The reward of knowing that I have helped mold positive citizens and leaders of tomorrow. (Now my next move is for the money!) lol

Teaching is a very tedious and stressful job but someone so eloquently stated that someone has to do the job and why not us. We are apart of a universal family that enables all other occupations to exist and function. I know it is tough teaching in this new day and age. I teach elementary music and the issues that these children are facing is totally unreal. I can honestly say that at times I feel completely helpless because I didn't have to struggle as some of these kids do so I really can't relate to some of them. I started trying to reach out in the best way possible especially outside of my classroom. I interact with the students all the time just so they understand that I care about them as a person as oppose to just performing well in music class. It is definitely a challenge but I wouldn't have it any other way. There is never a dull moment when you are teaching grades k-5.

I just want to encourage everyone... This is a hard job but, someone has to do it. I also want to challenge you as an educator. I realized VERY early in my career that I wanted to make a change. I'm not sure what everyone is teaching but, start preparing yourself for that next move. For me, I thought that it was administration. But, God had another plan...professional development. The job has it's challenges but,my reward at the end of the day is knowing that some teacher signed his/her contract for the next school year. They signed because they were given the support and encoragement that they needed to be successful.I just want to continue to encourage and deposit light into the darkness. These kids need us. They are our future.
I actually watched the clip of the teacher from B'more who was attacked. It really brought tears to my eyes for several reasons. One, I know how hard we work. People always want to down play our position because of the breaks. Let's face it, we need them all! Two, when I saw that young, black girl jump on that teacher, all I could see was another case of these kids not even respecting why we want to see them (black kids) succeed. Finally, the world is saying,"see they all act like animals". Our children have to learn that in most cases they come in behind. I don't even have to go into stats .. you know the drill. I know that all kids need us, but our kids need us especially. Hang in there .. the summer is rapidly approaching. Blessings....

It is crazy teaching these children today, however, I love what I do.

I have to agree with all my fellow educators. i am not the typical teacher yet, I majored in MET and have grown to love what I do. I teach now for the kids but they make it very hard to want to reach them. My biggest diappointment was that, I didn't know how far behind our children were in the inner city schools and the poor attitudes that follow tem are unreal. This is my third school and it has gotten progressively worse as I have moved around the city and it breaks my heart. However, I realize now that I teach for those few that still care and the joy I feel when I see that light go off and they really do understand. So let's keep teaching our butts off and stand tall knowing we do our best!!!! No matter what Bush, NCLB or anyone else says.

I totally agree with you Mr. Smith. If things don't change for the better, there will be some dark days ahead.

Teaching is becoming the most disrespected and degrading profession on earth. I love being an inspiration to students and the intrinsic rewards teaching brings however when teachers are leaving there craft because of being tested more, less pay, outrageous student loan debt, the threat of dealing with unpredictable students, dealing with everyone telling you how to do your job, etc... these issues need to be addressed in the public. Teaching is one of the Top5 Professions as far as value and importance to society. If Teaching started off with a "Respectable" income then we can attract more role models. Sorry to be long.

I totally agree that teaching is a really rewarding profession. I love what I do. And I teach in a low-income county, Title I school. I teach 8th grade and there is NEVER a dull moment. You have to have thick skin to be a teacher in this day and age. This is not a profession for punks!! But even after we stand up in the classroom and teach out butts off, are we really reaching the kids. Kids are sooooooooo different than they were when we came along. I am tired of seeing pregnant 7th and 8th graders. Tired of ignorant parents, who in some cases are younger than I am (I'm 29). Yes, with a a child in 8th grade. We teach and preach and they go back to their dysfunctional homes. So, What do we do?

I know as an administrator you worry about CYA, but to make that comment was rediculous. You are suppose to support in the public and chew the but in private. It is amazing the requirements that are put forth and the lack of support that goes with it. When will they recognize that we are professionals? I love my job, the students, and even my faculty and staff. Accept me to make the best decisions about what I have been taught and love to do. My hat is off to my fellow professionals in education. YOU DA BOMB!

Greetings to all. Teaching is the most rewarding job! There is nothing like seeing your former students attending your former school! Shout out to my TCHS Bulldogs now attending A&M!

Success is a Team Sport Posted By : Cheryl E. Cook

Recently, I've been approaching highway driving a little differently. I look for opportunities to help another motorist out. I try to be a bit more aware of a turn signal that I can respond to rather than driving in the zone. What would happen if we all approached highway driving with the focus on helping each other arrive safely at our destinations? What if it were a team effort?
