Hello to all of my fellow educators! Remember it takes a village to raise a child. We all know that there is not enough respect given to our profession! I appreciate everything each and everyone of you do on a daily basis!

You are so right, Mrs. Summers. If we can not teach our kids, who can? Keep your head up, stay strong, and continue the outstanding job!

Even with the many challenges that I have experienced throughout the years I've been in education, I can't imagine doing anything else in life. Everytime I am reminded how difficult our jobs are, I am then comforted when a former student sees me, smiles and says "You were a great teacher or thanks for all the help you gave me or I will be graduating this year". (and for me after 15 years, sometimes the graduations are highschool or even college) Time goes by so quickly and moments like those are what make it all worthwhile; when you see you have made a profound impact on another person's life. (And believe me we do it everyday however it sometimes reveals itself later) So teachers keep your heads up, keep doing your thing and foremost love the children 'cause everybody can't do it like we do.

In case you guys are unaware, up here in Chicago, along with all of the aforementioned issues, another problem is students getting killed. Last school year, 2006/2007, there were 32 Chicago Public School students killed. I'm not talking about car accidents or beatings. Thirty-two students shot and killed. Four were my personal students from Julian High School. Jarmel "Mello" Wyatt (purposely shot in the head by a fellow gang member during the early afternoon), Jacoby Ramsey, (shot nine times in an alley), Richard "Smitty" Chandler, (shot in the head while walking with his brother and two females from Subway (the reastaurant) at 4:15 in the evening allegedly by a rival gang member and one of my students as well), and Blair Holt, (shot while riding on the public bus just leaving school). That's more homicides that Huntsville has in one year total. And to add insult to injury, there has already been 23 homicides of Chicago Public School students, it would have been 25, but the last two withdrew from public school in January and February respectively. And the sad part is they are expecting this year's total to surpass last year's. And, as you may have assumed, the vast majority of those murdered were African-American, the others Hispanic.

Yes, it is VERY frustrating to teach, preach, AND ultimately parent. This is why our assignment is greater than any pay check. As we cultivate these young minds, these are more reasons why we must stand, smile and deliver. Sometimes, we are the only smile that they see. It is equally important that we spend time getting to know your student's background so that you can educate the whole child. One of the most rewarding gifts that I ever received from a child was a letter. I will never forget Ashley. She was my hood girl. A diamond in the rough.. you know we all have them. Ashley wrote me a letter and told me because I loved her enough not to see her fail, she would be entering college the next school year. As you can imagine, tears flowed. So for everyday that I felt discouraged, tired, and busted, I thought about Ashley. As sad as it is, yes, we do sign up for all that and above. This my fellow educators is why God has granted us this great responsibilty.Everyone cannot be entrusted to this duty. Be encouraged.. Love those babies and watch the flowers grow

Greetings Collegues,

I agree that education has become one of the most under compensted and derespected profession of our era. We as young gifted and African American educators, must still remain focussed and poised for the challenges (political, social, economical, and racial ) that we face each day. We must understand that we hold the keys to children's future in our hands.

A) We have the power to put out the fire of our children's dreams and aspirations with ridicule and negative words.

B) We have the power to ignite them with positive words of praise and encouragement.

I have chosen to stay in the profession and gain my rewards from doing the later of the two.

"Be encouraged my brothers and sisters !!!"

Mr. Bishop,

To voice the pedagogy of numerous professional educators one would say, "No" we do not get our due. We educate people in every profession and yet we still are not respected or compensated for the job we do.

A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others.

Success is a Team Sport Posted By : Cheryl E. Cook

Recently, I've been approaching highway driving a little differently. I look for opportunities to help another motorist out. I try to be a bit more aware of a turn signal that I can respond to rather than driving in the zone. What would happen if we all approached highway driving with the focus on helping each other arrive safely at our destinations? What if it were a team effort?
